Donald Trump, who spent decades building his name in New York City, has thrown himself right into the middle of the mayoral race. He’s not just backing Andrew Cuomo—he’s warning that if Democratic frontrunner Zohran Mamdani wins, the city could lose federal funding.
The election is today, November 4, and it’s basically a two-man showdown between Cuomo and Mamdani. Republican Curtis Sliwa is trailing far behind in the polls.
Trump has cranked the heat up even higher with a blunt post on Truth Social, saying he’d cut off most federal cash to the city if Mamdani takes the job.
“Love him or hate him, you’ve got to vote for Andrew Cuomo and hope he knocks it out of the park. He can do it—Mamdani can’t!” Trump wrote. He added that voting for Sliwa would just split the vote and hand the win to Mamdani.
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home.”
Trump Doubles Down on Cutting NYC Funds if Mamdani Wins
He went on: “As a Communist, this once-great city has zero shot at success—or even survival! Things can only get worse with a Communist in charge, and I’m not about to throw good money after bad. My job is to run the country, and I’m convinced New York will be a total economic and social train wreck if Mamdani wins.”
Back in June, talking to Fox News, Trump called a Mamdani victory “unthinkable” and labeled him a “pure communist.”
“Look, if he somehow gets in, I’ll be president—and he’ll have to play ball or the money stops. Simple as that,” Trump said.
He’s slapped the “communist” tag on Mamdani repeatedly. Mamdani pushes back, saying he’s just a progressive who wants to tax the ultra-rich to pay for schools, transit, and housing.
“I don’t think we need billionaires,” Mamdani has said.
Mamdani Fires Back
At a press event in the city on Monday, Mamdani took a swing at Trump’s Cuomo endorsement.
“The MAGA crowd cozying up to Andrew Cuomo shows exactly what Trump wants: a mayor who’ll be good for him, not for New Yorkers,” Mamdani said.
