Individual Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer with Bone Metastasis

Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, according to a statement released by his personal office on Sunday. The announcement followed a medical evaluation prompted by worsening urinary symptoms, which led to the discovery of a prostate nodule. Biden, 82, was diagnosed on Friday with metastatic prostate cancer, classified with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), the highest grade indicating severe malignancy.

Despite the seriousness of the condition, the statement emphasized that the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which improves the prospects for treatment and management. Biden and his family are currently exploring treatment options with his physicians.

On Monday, the former president addressed the diagnosis in a post on X, writing, “Cancer touches us all,” and expressing gratitude for the support he and his wife, Jill Biden, have received. He added, “We have learned that we are strongest in the broken places,” reflecting on their shared resilience.

This news comes shortly after reports that Biden had undergone tests for a “small nodule” on his prostate. Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a urologist not involved in Biden’s care, noted that prostate cancer is common among aging men, while Dr. Benjamin Davies, a specialist in urologic oncology, explained that a Gleason score of 9 denotes the most aggressive form of the disease.

Biden is currently at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, though officials have not disclosed where he is receiving treatment.

His health had already been under public scrutiny during the 2024 election campaign. As the oldest president in U.S. history, Biden faced mounting concerns about his age and physical condition, particularly after a weak debate performance against Donald Trump, which led to his withdrawal from the race weeks later.

Earlier in 2024, Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, declared him “fit for duty” following a physical at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. However, reports from a book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’s Alex Thompson described mounting signs of decline, including an incident where Biden reportedly failed to recognize actor George Clooney and internal discussions about potentially needing a wheelchair for a second term.

Since leaving the White House, Biden has kept a relatively low profile. He recently appeared with Jill Biden on ABC’s “The View,” dismissing claims of cognitive decline. “They’re mistaken,” he said firmly. Jill Biden defended her husband, describing his tireless work ethic even during late hours.

Despite ongoing political tension, former President Donald Trump set aside rivalry to offer his best wishes. “The news of Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis saddens Melania and me,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We wish Joe a speedy and full recovery and send our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family.”

Vice President Kamala Harris also expressed her support: “Joe is a fighter,” she wrote on X. “I have no doubt he’ll face this with the same strength and hope that have always defined him.”

Experts acknowledge the severity of Biden’s condition but emphasize that advances in treatment offer hope. “Even patients with high-risk prostate cancer can live a relatively normal life,” said Dr. Brahmbhatt. Still, he warned that treatments can affect memory, mood, and quality of life, making careful planning essential.

Dr. Davies added that while the cancer is not curable due to its spread to bone, modern therapies have significantly improved outcomes, extending lives and enhancing comfort.

Biden’s battle with cancer is deeply personal. In 2015, he lost his son Beau to brain cancer. During his vice presidency, Biden led the Obama administration’s Cancer Moonshot initiative to accelerate cancer research. In 2022, President Biden revived the effort, setting an ambitious goal of cutting cancer deaths in half over 25 years and investing $150 million in new research.

In response to the diagnosis, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama offered messages of support. Clinton noted Biden’s long-standing dedication to fighting cancer, while Obama praised his resilience: “Joe has done more than anyone to advance lifesaving cancer treatments,” he wrote. “He will face this with his characteristic determination.”

As Biden and his family navigate the challenges ahead, their focus remains on treatment, recovery, and continuing the fight against a disease that has touched their lives so deeply.
