Macron Clarifies Financial Aid to Ukraine in the Face of Trumpโs Assertions
In a press session following their meeting, Trump claimed that Ukraine benefited heavily from US backing and suggested it was time for some repayment.
Macron responded to reporters, stating: โThis war cost all of us a lot of money, and this is the responsibility of Russia because the aggressor is Russia.โ
Trump confidently replied, implying that the European Unionโs aid was lent and not given: โJust so you understand, Europe is loaning the money to Ukraine. They get their money back.โ
It was then that Macron corrected him by placing his hand gently on Trumpโs wrist, explaining: โNo. To be frank, we paid 60 percent of the total effort. Like the US, loans, guarantees, grants, and we provided real money.โ
He clarified further, saying: โIf at the end of the negotiation, they are ready to give it to us, super, it will loan at the end of the day, and we will have paid for that.โ
Trump sheepishly replied, โIf you believe that, itโs OK with me,โ but maintained his initial stance: โBut they get their money back, and we donโt.โ
