Twin brother of teen stabbed in heart at school track meet breaks silence

Hunter Metcalf choked back his tears as he explained the heartbreaking moment he desperately tried to stop the blood from gushing from the heart of his twin brother Austin, who was stabbed to death at a high school track meet.

On April 2, about 10 a.m., Hunter was with hisย twinย brother Austin, a star athlete who was competing in discus throw and shot-put events at a track meet, held at the David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

โ€œWe did everything together. You name anything in the world, itโ€™s always us two. We were always basically one person,โ€ Hunter said of him and Austin, the football MVP for the team the two played.

Hunter, born four minutes after Austin, explained that him and his twin โ€“ both juniors at Memorial High School outside Dallas โ€“ were in the schoolโ€™s tent when a student from another school decided to enter.

โ€œThis kid was sitting under out tent at track, we asked him to move. He started getting aggressive and talking reckless and my brother stepped in and said, โ€˜you need to move,โ€™โ€ Hunter told ABC affiliateย WFAAย in a heartbreaking interview. โ€œAnd heโ€™s like, โ€˜Make me move.โ€™

โ€˜I tried to help himโ€™

According to aย witness, the other student โ€“ identified as Anthony Karmel from Centennial High School โ€“ told Austin, โ€œtouch me and see what happens.โ€ Then he allegedly reached into his ย backpack and pulled out a black knife andย stabbedย the twin once in the chest before running away.

โ€œI tried to whip around as fast as I could. I didnโ€™t see the stabโ€ฆbut then I looked at my brotherโ€ฆ and Iโ€™m not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him,โ€ a teary-eyed Hunter said, adding that tried to save his brotherโ€™s life by stopping the blood.

โ€œI tried to help him.โ€

He held his twin until first responders arrived and attempted resuscitation.

โ€œThey yanked me off him,โ€ Hunter said, who added he wasnโ€™t allowed to ride in the ambulance with his brother.

The twinโ€™s dad, Jeff Metcalf, took Hunter to the hospital.

โ€˜Died in brothers armsโ€™

โ€œThey were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brotherโ€™s arms,โ€ Metcalf toldย NBCย of his son, who he described on aย GoFundMeย campaign as โ€œa bright young manโ€ whose โ€œsmile would light up the room.โ€

Metcalf continued, โ€œI rushed up there and I saw him on the gurney, and I could tell โ€“ they said he wasnโ€™t breathing. I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was, and I was very concerned, so I had to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospitalโ€ฆโ€

Despite lifesaving measures by emergency personnel, Austin died of his injuries.

โ€˜Big brotherโ€™

โ€œI saw him for his last momentsโ€ฆhe knew how much I loved himโ€ฆI [would] do for him anything, no matter what. I always told him I want to be just like him I always looked up to him. He was a big brother even though weโ€™re the same age.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know why someone would do that to someone just over that little argument,โ€ Hunter said of the tragic incident. โ€œHe was a strong man. He was strong, strong kidโ€ฆIโ€™m strong too but heโ€™s a little stronger. He [was] just always there for me so itโ€™s really heartbreaking to see how this happened.โ€

โ€˜Studโ€™

Hunter also shared how heโ€™ll miss his โ€œbigย brotherโ€ on the field next season when football starts.

โ€œHe was a stud, and I always try to fill those shoes and play with him. I had a blast playing sports with him my whole lifeโ€ฆme and him always against people. Our last year together was this year. Itโ€™s really heartbreaking to not see him next year on the field,โ€ he said of Austin, a star linebacker. โ€œHe was a great guy overall itโ€™s just really hard to see someone go like thatโ€ฆfor like recklessnessโ€

Speaking of Karmelo, Hunter said โ€œIโ€™ve never met this kid in my entire lifeโ€ until the โ€œ30 secondโ€ โ€œaltercation,โ€ that ended in the death of his brother.

โ€˜I did itโ€™

ABC reports that after Karmelo tossed the weapon into the bleachers and was taken out of the stadium, heย told police, โ€œIโ€™m not alleged, I did it.โ€

The affidavit reveals that Karmelo also reportedly asked police if Metcalf was going to be okay while he was in the back of the squad car. He also claimed it was self defense.

The 17-year-old of Frisco, Texas, โ€œis charged with murder, a 1st Degree Felony.โ€ The bond has been set to $1,000,000.
