A woman is angry and hurt when her husband forgets their 50th wedding anniversary and throws his belongings in the gutter โ until he comes home with an unusual excuse.
She had stood by his side through thick and thin and given him three children and the best years of her life, and what did she get? Not even a bouquet of ratty daisies, let alone red roses.

Betty looked at the wall clock and frowned. 21:30. He hadnโt even bothered to come home for the special dinner sheโd prepared! This was the last straw!
Trust is the cornerstone of any relationship, and doubt wears away at the love that holds it together.
Two hours later, Betty heard her husbandโs car pull into the driveway and smiled grimly. Donald wasnโt going to enjoy his evening, not one little bit.
She immediately heard a shout: โBETTY! What is going on here!โ
She marched outside and stood on the porch, her fists on her hips. โWhat do you want?โ she asked.

Donald was standing in the garden and he looked very angry. He pointed a finger at an old worn-out recliner sitting on the lawn along with several boxes of books and bric-a-brac.
โWhat are my things doing out on the lawn?โ he asked. โHave you run mad, woman?โ
โMad!โ screamed Betty, and the lights went on in the house next door. โYou are the one who must be mad! Do you have Alzheimerโs or amnesia? Iโm kicking you out. Iโm divorcing you!โ
โDivorcing me?โ gasped Donald, flabbergasted. โIโm seventy-eight years old and youโre seventy-five and you want a DIVORCE?โ
โYes!โ cried Betty angrily. โDo you think that just because Iโm seventy-five Iโm no longer a woman? That you can take me for granted? Well, I wonโt let you!โ

โBetty,โ Donald said. โBe reasonable. What is this all about?โ
โYou forgot our anniversary AGAIN!โ Betty said angrily. โWeโve been together for fifty years and I have to remind you of my birthday. I understand you werenโt there, but you were definitely there for the wedding!โ
โBets,โ Donald protested. โThat was the happiest day of my lifeโฆโ
โThen why donโt you remember it?โ Betty asked. โWhy donโt you bring me flowers or take me dancing? You donโt love me anymore. You havenโt loved me in years.โ
Donald shook his head. โI love you, Betty,โ he said. โYou are the love of my lifeโฆโ

โThen why didnโt you come home for dinner?โ Betty asked. โI made a special dinner and lit candles and set out flowers and you didnโt show up! Where were you? Out with another woman?โ
Donald grinned. โYes,โ he said and stepped aside. Standing there was a slim girl in her twenties with Bettyโs blue eyes and Donaldโs wide smile.
โHannah!โ Betty cried and ran down the steps. She would have fallen if Donald hadnโt caught her. She threw her arms around the girl and started crying.
โOh, Hannah,โ she sobbed. โItโs been too long! Iโve missed you so much!โ

โHi, Gran Betty,โ Hannah said. โIโm sorry we were so late, but my flight was delayed. Poor Gran Donald waited for hours!โ
Betty turned to her husband. โYou knew she was coming and you didnโt tell me?โ she protested.
โI didnโt KNOW,โ Donald said triumphantly. โI arranged it! It was supposed to have been your anniversary surprise, but the flight was lateโฆ Youโve been complaining about how much you miss your only grandchild, so I sent her a plane ticket!โ
โOh, Don!โ Betty cried, and put her arms around her husband. โIโm sorry! I thoughtโฆ I started thinking crazy thingsโฆโ

โBetty,โ Donald said tenderly. โI havenโt looked at another woman in fifty years and Iโm not about to start now.โ
โDonald,โ Betty said. โWhat did I do to deserve you?โ
โI donโt know,โ Don said. โBut I can tell you weโre going to have a hell of a time getting all my stuff back in the house where it belongs!โ
With Hannahโs help, Don and Betty got everything tidied up and sat down for a midnight snack. โBy the way,โ Donald said. โI have another surprise for you. Tomorrow night weโre having a party with all our children and all our friends. Iโve arranged for Father Bartholomew to be there so we can renew our vows.โ

โBut what am I going to wear?โ gasped Betty.
โI donโt know about the dress, but I have a ring!โ Don said, then he dropped down to one knee and pulled out a little jewelry box. โBetty Delancy Carmichael, will you marry me again?โ
The next day, the Carmichaels celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in style and Betty looked lovely in a pretty cream suit and a little veil. As Donald kissed her, she vowed never to doubt him again as long as she lived.
