Matzoh Ball, a newborn Boston Terrier with a cleft palate, entered the world facing more challenges than most puppies. Born with several congenital defects, including a severe cleft palate, hydrocephalus, and a liver shunt, this little boy’s fight for survival has been a testament to his resilience and the dedication of those who care for him.
From the beginning, Matzoh Ball could not be nursed by his mother due to his cleft palate. But despite this challenge, his caretakers quickly stepped in, naming him Matzoh Ball and committing to his well-being. Tube feeding became essential to provide the nutrition he needed, and Matzoh Ball handled it like a champ. By Day 10, he was even given a pacifier to satisfy his urge to nurse, which became a source of comfort and joy for him.
As Matzoh Ball grew, milestones marked his progress. By Day 12, his eyes were wide open, revealing a little more of his personality. On Day 22, his caretakers celebrated his development, noting how well he was adapting to his tube feedings and introducing some softened kibble into his diet. The little “cleftie” was proving himself to be a fighter.
At Day 60, Matzoh Ball had come a long way. He had begun to thrive, eating a special gelatin formulation designed to accommodate his cleft palate and ensure he received the quality nutrition needed to help him grow strong. He became a good eater, gaining weight steadily. His caretakers’ love and careful attention, coupled with this specially curated diet, allowed Matzoh Ball to flourish.
Day 70 marked yet another heartwarming moment in Matzoh Ball’s journey. His love for snuggling with his caretakers melted hearts, and despite the many medical challenges stacked against him, Matzoh Ball continues to live with love and determination. His story is one of hope and survival, and he continues to inspire those who follow his progress.
