Donald Trump is going all in on his crackdown on crime in major cities. On Tuesday, he suggested to a gathering of military leaders to use these American cities as โtraining groundsโ for the military due to โa war from within.โ
Donald Trump met with top generals and admirals in Quantico, Virginia, on Tuesday. That the president has made defending the homeland a priority is no secret. Now he has taken another step towards his view of safety.
Donald said that defending the homeland is the militaryโs โmost important priority,โ according to The Hill. According to the news outlet, he flagged that military leaders could be tasked with assisting in federal interventions.
Two of the cities Trump mentioned were Chicago and New York City, two Democratic-led cities.
โTheyโre very unsafe places, and weโre going to straighten them out one by one,โ Trump said, per The Hill. โAnd this is going to be a major part for some of the people in this room. Thatโs a war, too. Itโs a war from within.โ
โI told [Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth], we should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military โ National Guard, but our military, because weโre going into Chicago very soon. Thatโs a big city with an incompetent governor,โ he added.
Donald Trumpโs administration has previously deployed National Guard troops in both Washington, D.C., and Memphis, Tennessee, to combat crime. Earlier this week, he also announced that troops were to be sent to Portland, Oregon.
While Democratic politicians have compared Donald Trumpโs use of the military to authoritarianism, the president says itโs necessary because โAmerica is under invasion from within.โ
โAmerica is under invasion from within. Weโre under invasion from within,โ Donald Trump added. โNo different than a foreign enemy, but more difficult in many ways because they donโt wear uniforms.โ
