It wasnโt so long ago that McCartney released an album,ย McCartney III, which he wrote and recorded during the lockdown. In a promotional interview with actor Idris Elba, McCartney explained that he hadnโt set out to make an album during the lockdown; it just happened naturally.
โEveryone cleaned out their closets and achieved all they had planned to do. Making an album was like that for me,โ he said. โI had no intention of making an album. So I had ten songs and wondered, โWhat am I going to do with them?โ I had no idea I was making an album, so I only recorded ten tracks.โ
Regarding the albumโs title, McCartney explained to Elba that naming itย McCartney IIIย was a natural choice, given the solo nature of the project and its continuity with his previous solo albums,ย McCartney Iย andย McCartney II. โI realized, since I played โMcCartney Iโ and โMcCartney IIโ myself, that I had done them in the same style, so this would be โMcCartney III.โ So then I thought, โOkay, now I know what Iโm doing.โโ
