According to several sources, actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner passed away at the age of 54.
Naturally, Warnerโs most well-known part was that of Theo Huxtable, who he played in all eight seasons of The Cosby Show.
Warner drowned on Sunday, July 20, off the coast of Costa Rica, according to police, who verified this to ABC News.
The actor passed away close to Limonโs Cocles beach, according to officials. Police say his body was discovered on Sunday afternoon after he got trapped in a strong current while swimming.
The national police of Costa Rica legally identified Warnerโs remains and verified that hypoxia was the cause of his death.
Warner was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series after working on The Cosby Show from 1984 until 1992.
Warner most recently starred in the Fox medical drama The Resident, but he previously played a significant part in the 1990s sitcom Malcolm & Eddie.
In 2023, the Cosby Show actor spoke with People on the legacy it has left behind thirty years after it ended.
Warner said: โWhat made it so groundbreaking was its universality. NBC initially saw it as a show about an upper-middle-class Black family. Mr. [Bill] Cosby diligently impressed upon them that the show was about an upper-middle-class family that happened to be Black.โ
The showโs reputation was somewhat damaged by Cosbyโs legal troubles, which included the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturning a conviction for sexual assault in June 2021.
In the same interview, Warner commented: โRegardless of how some people may feel about the show now, Iโm still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show that had such a profound impact on โ first and foremost, Black culture โ but also American culture.โ
He added: โI know I can speak for all the cast when I say The Cosby Show is something that we are all still very proud of.โ
โWe share a unique experience that keeps us lovingly bonded no matter how much time goes between seeing or hearing from each other.โ
