Following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 2022, King Charles’ long-awaited coronation finally came to happen. His brief rule so far appears to be different from what he may have intended due to his cancer diagnosis last year and the continued treatment that followed. However, he is still making an attempt to travel on state visits, as demonstrated by his and Camilla’s journey to Australia and Samoa last autumn, despite taking time off to receive treatment last year, which is reportedly expected to continue in 2025.
According to recent speculations, the queen will shortly travel abroad once more. He is rumoured to be going to Italy in April. However, in my opinion, Charles should not be leaving the UK at all because the time has come to get ready for the future. Refrain from travelling overseas, Your Majesty, and make the only sensible choice.
There is no denying that King Charles must be having a great time in his new role. One can only assume that Charles thought it was time for him to take over after his late mother, despite the apparent pain of Queen Elizabeth’s passing. After all, the king had trained for the position for more than 70 years.
Since then, Charles has made a name for himself as a staunch supporter of modernising the monarchy, even at his advanced age. He is more than willing to pause while on royal duty to chat with well-wishers and share a few jokes. He was seen talking to several American tourists in an Instagram video that went viral a while back, humorously apologising for making their walk through London difficult because the roadway had been blocked off for His Majesty.
Charles is optimistic in spite of his continued cancer therapy. Even if his duties multiplied tenfold, his official title change from prince to king probably wouldn’t have a significant impact on his daily life.
Now that he is the current ruler, Charles can watch his oldest son, Prince William, excel in his position as the heir apparent. A great experience for any grandparent, royal or not, is being able to spend a lot of time with his grandkids.
Naturally, Charles’s life has many benefits, but last year’s cancer diagnosis was a major turning point. Despite having to take a break during his initial treatment, the monarch decided to visit Australia and Samoa last year.
According to reports, Charles put his medical care on hold for the state visit, a decision that his physicians authorised. However, is this really what a 76-year-old should be doing in that circumstance, if we’re being honest? No, in my opinion. Since Prince William is next in line, it’s time Charles begin promoting him to a more senior position at the adult table.
Like his father, Prince William has spent his whole life preparing to become king. Last year, he took over for his father for the reopening of Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral, and he has since filled in for Charles on multiple occasions. It’s unclear when William will take the throne, but if Charles lives as long as his mother, Queen Elizabeth, did, there may be a twenty-year wait.
Nevertheless, in this instance, Charles’ care and recuperation must come first. Within the UK, where even the longest journeys can be completed with the relative comfort of a rail ride, it’s one thing to go far and wide.
But for a 76-year-old guy battling cancer, spending 16 hours on a plane, meeting people one after another, and going to ceremony after ceremony isn’t a good fit. No, Charles’ physical and mental health could suffer greatly from state visits with so many commitments.
Prince William is frequently regarded as a representation of a stable monarchy in the future. He is the third most popular member of the Royal Family, behind his wife Kate Middleton and, sadly, the late Queen Elizabeth II, according to a YouGov poll conducted in the final quarter of 2024. Starting to represent his father on demanding state visits abroad is a great approach for him to prepare for taking over and developing his own leadership style.
Charles should now delegate more authority to his son in order to demonstrate to the public that the Royal Family is prospering and making sensible choices. There would be no monarchy at all without the backing of the British people, as well as supporters around the world.
It might be detrimental to King Charles if he chooses to visit Italy himself. It is not acceptable to see a king disregard his obligations to the Crown and his own health. Charles, you don’t have to abdicate. Simply let your son to assist you in getting ready for the future, as well as the monarchy in general.
